Jesus Wins

F E A R

It drives my inner being

Permeating my soul

It's aroma captivating

Pulling me closer

Voices screaming "Let it in"

The door opens

The fear drawing nearer

Setting foot inside

Then a Hand intercedes

"Be gone" It speaks

With the authority of thunder

And the intimacy of a whisper

It tells me

"Jesus wins."

He said: "Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you; 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's...'" -2 Chronicles 20:15

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. -John 16:33

Stretch

If you know me, you know that I love volleyball. It's my favorite sport to play and watch.

Well, before this fall's season started, I made up my mind that this year was the year I was going to work my tail off to finally get my overhand serve down. I was going to practice and practice until I was good enough. I wanted to increase my skill level and be better than ever.

So I worked. Hard. But finally, I did it. I achieved what I set out to do. Getting there was hard. I was always sore, and tired. My body felt stretched because, well, it was! It wasn't used to all of the exercise. But because of the sweat and soreness, I became a better volleyball player.

Now you're probably like "seriously? A post about volleyball? I hate sports!" but just hold on. I'm getting there.

About a month after the volleyball season started, I was in my room reading my Bible. I always feel at peace when I read it, but this time I just felt kind of empty.

My heart cried out, "God, I feel like I'm not getting anywhere in my relationship with You."  And I was right. Even though I had attended two incredible Christian camps that summer that gave me tools to grow in my walk with God, I wasn't growing. It bothered me for a few days. I just couldn't figure out why I wasn't where I wanted to be spiritually. Then, after volleyball practice, it occured to me.

I wanted so badly to grow in my volleyball skills, so I set my mind on it and worked for it. Like I said, it hurt, it was hard, it stretched me physically. I could have given up (and wanted to frequently), but I didn't. And because I didn't, I obtained my goal.

I realized right then that to grow spiritually, I had to do the same thing. I would need to stretch myself, work hard, pour over the Word and study it earnestly if I ever wanted to grow. I can't just sit there and read a couple of verses that make me feel good inside and expect to instantly become this strong Christian.

Just like I had to work hard to achieve my volleyball goals, I have to work hard to acheive my spiritual goals.

So no more sitting there, wondering why I'm not growing and then not doing anything about it.
It's time to stretch.

Trusting the Plan

This was a huge source of encouragement this morning.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28

Before you were born, God set out specific plans for your life. He knew that you would have passions and desires. He thoughtfully placed each one of them on your heart for a reason. Some things He knew just wouldn't work out. But that's okay, because the other plans He had in mind you wouldn't even be able to imagine. Plans that if revealed all at once would blow our tiny little minds. Plans that would frighten us, because we weren't prepared yet.

And that's just it

Each plan, each little detail in our personal novel requires just the right amount of strength and preparation. God knows that we're too weak to accomplish everything He has laid out for us all at once. That's why he gives us small bits here and there. He supplies the means to do the things He has laid out for us in this moment.

So don't get discouraged when it seems like nothing is going the way you expected.

There is a perfect plan that your Creator designed specifically for you to fulfill.

Trust Him, O child of God, for He cares for you.

"For I know the plans I have for you" says the Lord, "plans to prosper you, and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

Hidden Treasures

My heart and my mind have been heavy lately.

I just got back from church camp a few days ago. During the week, I really started thinking about college, and my future in general. I only have 2 years left of high school, and then boom, its here. Since then, my mind has been swimming with questions about which college I should go to, what I should study, and whether or not I should even go to college at all. Then worry settled in, along with questions of doubt and fear.

What if I don't graduate?

What if I'm not good enough for college?

I'm not smart enough.

I won't find friends.

I'll chicken out.

The thoughts were clouding my brain. I knew I had to get rid of them. So God led me to pick up my Bible and head to the woods.

I walked for a little while, finally finding a place to open my Bible. I turned to Isaiah 45.

I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.
I closed my Bible and after a little while, headed back to my house. Along the way, I walked through a small clearing that was full of green grass. Yet in the middle, was a single red leaf. It stuck out, so I picked it up. As I was holding on to it, the Lord spoke to my heart.

This leaf didn't stew and worry about when it would be released. It didn't question Me about when it would travel to a new destination. It patiently waited for me to release it from its home. My Daughter, don't worry about when I will release you. I have you where I want you to be, and I will hold you. When I am done preparing you, I will release you to travel to a new destination, but now is not the time. Do not fear.  Just as I said in My Word, "I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summoned you by name."

My Savior handed me a treasure.
A small, perfectly designed leaf to let me know that He is in control of where I will go.

He is Lord.

Fifteen

This past week, I was so very blessed to attend Worldview Academy. If you haven't heard of it, it is a Christian camp that focuses on teaching leadership, apologetics, different religions and worldviews. They bring in top notch speakers and give you hardcore lectures throughout the week.

On the first day, the camp director told us that if we didn't have the best week of our lives, we could find him on the last day and receive a full refund. At first I was thinking "wow, that's a pretty high-and-mighty statement!" but as the week went on, I realized that he knew what he was talking about. It was literally the best week of my life.

One amazing thing about Worldview Academy, is that they teach you about evangelism, and then in the middle of the week send you out to actually practice it. So on Wednesday, they handed us all these tracts, spent an hour or so talking about how to use them, prayed, and then headed to the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield to tell people about Jesus. I have to admit, I thought I was going to be sick beforehand. I was so scared about approaching people and trying to sputter out the words that needed to be said.

We arrived at the campus, huddled in a group and said one last prayer for strength and clear minds before our director sent us off. I was still really nervous, but as we started walking, I was receiving more and more peace.

My group and I approached maybe 6 people, got the questions out, told them that Jesus had died for their sins, and handed them the tracts. It was going pretty well, but I was getting discouraged. I felt like we weren't really reaching the people we talked to, that we were just reading scripts and checking boxes.

Pretty soon, the 45 minutes that we had were up, and we headed back to camp to debrief.
People started talking about awesome conversations they had had with people, and one group had even succeeded in leading a man to Christ! You would think I would have been overjoyed, but I was still discouraged. The feelings of inadequacy were stronger now, and I started believing the lies that were telling me I hadn't done my job.

But then, yesterday as I was sharing this with some of my family members, this song came to my mind.

If it takes fifteen times
To hear about Jesus
For someone to believe
Wherever I stand in line
I've got to make a difference
In case it comes down to me
'Cause, I may be the third, may be the seventh
There may be years in between
But what if I'm fifteen

Man. I felt amazing relief after I realized that it's really not up to me. I am here to plant the seeds, whether I am the third or the seventh to plant them, I don't know. That's up to the Lord. But what if I'm fifteen?

What if you're fifteen?

Yesterday, Today, Forever

God never ceases to reveal new things to us. I find that rather amazing. It's as if we, small little Christians, read a section in the Bible and instantly come to the conclusion that we know everything there is to know about our Creator. I can just hear God giving a great big "hah!".

For quite a while now, He's been showing me small bits of His unfathomable power. A new angle at which to gaze into His glory. This is what He has been revealing:

He is the same God that visited Adam and Eve in the garden.
He is the same God that comforted David in all his ups and downs.
He is the same God that kept Noah and his family, along with the animals all safe.
He is the same God who told Hosea to return to his wife over and over.
He is the same God who turned the evil, Christian slaying Saul into the man that spread the Word to thousands.
He is the exact same God that rose Jesus on the 3rd day. FROM THE DEAD (that still blows my mind).

And that same God is working in me.

It takes my breath away. Why do I worry? Why do I fear? Why do I sit and ponder upon the things of the world when the power of Christ is in me?! ME the girl who lies. ME the girl who in anger lashes out. ME the girl who compares herself to other people, failing to trust the power of God's work inside of her very being!
I will never understand.
But thank you, Father. Thank you for being the same God.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." -Hebrews 13:8
